Who we are
The Public Jobs is a job search website operated by The Public Jobs LTD, registered at [registered address]. We are the data controller for the personal data described here. Our ICO registration number is [ICO registration number].
We are a job discovery service. We gather vacancy listings from approved sources and send you to the original employer or job board to apply. We do not receive or process your job application.
What we collect
If you create an account, we hold:
- your name and email address
- a password, stored only as a hash by our authentication provider — we never see it
- optionally, a phone number, town or city, and postcode
- your job preferences: location, distance, minimum pay, categories, contract type, shift and experience level
- the jobs you save and the job alerts you create
- a record of the email permissions you have given or withdrawn
We deliberately do not ask for identity documents, bank details, National Insurance numbers, or any special category data such as health or ethnicity. If a form on this site ever asks you for those, it is not ours.
If you do not have an account
We record that a job page was viewed and that an apply link was selected, against a random identifier generated by your own browser. That identifier is not linked to you and exists only so the same visit is not counted twice.
Why we use it, and our lawful basis
- Running your account — saved jobs, preferences, signing in. Lawful basis: performance of a contract with you.
- Matching jobs to you — using the preferences you set. Lawful basis: performance of a contract with you.
- Job alert emails — lawful basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- Marketing emails — lawful basis: your consent, given separately from job alerts.
- Keeping the site working and secure — rate limiting, abuse prevention, error logs. Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in operating a functioning, non-fraudulent service.
Who we share it with
- Supabase — hosts our database and authentication.
- Vercel — hosts the website.
- [email provider] — sends account and alert emails.
- [AI provider] — processes job listing text to categorise and summarise vacancies. Your personal data is not sent to it.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with employers or job boards. When you select apply you leave our site, and that employer or job board’s own privacy policy applies from that point.
How long we keep it
- Account data: until you delete your account.
- Records of email permissions: kept after account deletion, because they are how we can show we had permission to email you. They contain only an email address and the decisions made.
- View and apply-click counts: kept in aggregate, with no link to you.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, and withdraw consent for marketing at any time.
You can delete your account yourself from your account settings, which removes your profile, preferences, saved jobs and alerts. For anything else, contact us at [privacy email address].
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
